Normally a set of dies used to produce coins or medals can be used to strike many hundreds of pieces. The dies used to produce this medal cracked after striking only 2 or 3 pieces. At a cost of over $700 per die, it quickly became evident that this medal was just too big to strike. Due to the popularity of this design, the project was not cancelled but scaled back to the point where only 250 pieces were produced instead of the 2,500 medals originally planned for. It is unlikely that anyone will ever attempt to strike a medal of this size again, leaving this medal in a class by itself.

The design consists of three Elvis portraits surrounded by an American Eagle, a motif inspired by the jumpsuits made famous by Elvis on stage. "Elvis Aron Presley, Welcome To My World", it reads in classic simplicity.

If you look closely at the front of this masterpiece you will notice the Royal Canadian Mint logo on one side of the medal and an FG mark on the other side. These two mint marks were added to acknowledge the impressive talent and collaboration between the engravers at the Royal Canadian Mint who engraved the back of this medal and Frank Gasparro, former chief engraver at the United States Mint who lent his incredible talents to this project by engraving the front of the medal.

During his tenure at the U.S. Mint, Mr. Gasparro created the design for the Lincoln Cent Reverse, the Kennedy half dollar, Eagle Reverse and both sides of the Susan Anthony B. dollar to name a few. Mr. Gasparro eager to work on this medal offered his services at only a fraction of the $18,000 cost of the job, making this project possible.

As far as is known, this was the first and only time this type of cooperation between the two countries has ever been achieved adding to the mystique of this very unique medal.

Unlike the previous series, each Welcome To My World Medal had its individual certified number of authenticity engraved right into its edge before leaving the plant in Ottawa. This process is backed by official Mint records ensuring accuracy and strict adherence to the numbering procedure.

Due to striking difficulties and the incredible demand for this piece, the pre-issue price of $325 quickly rose to $1,000 as is reflected on the original pamphlet for this medal.

Due to the demand for this medal, it sold out immediately to Elvis fans that are very hesitant to give them up making this medal very difficult if not impossible to obtain. We managed to track down a 1996 copy of the Graceland Express where 2 of these medals were put up for sale. To view the details, please click on the Graceland Express Link below.

Each Medal comes in a velvet lined cherry wood case but was not encapsulated due to its size.
