The original design of this medal called for a "$10" denomination on the back to reflect the intrinsic value of its pure silver content. Production began according to schedule but after the first shipment, officials at the Royal Canadian Mint realized that the "10" mark was "inappropriate" and had the dies destroyed ensuring that no more pieces would be struck, ever. No other official mint in the world has ever produced anything like this medal in the past, nor will they ever in the future, making this piece nicknamed the "King Coin" a true rarity.
Demand for theses medals crossed over into two areas as Elvis Presley fans had to compete with coin collectors for a chance to obtain one of theses genuine rarities leading to a price appreciation that continues to this day.
This medal was sold out before the other medals could be released and therefore it was only sold separately. The same coin without the "$10" mark was sold as part of the set along with the Jailhouse Rock and Gold Album Tribute medals.
